New signing Colby Bishop scored his second goal for Stanley as the Reds signed off their pre-season with a 2-0 win over Morecambe at Leyland.
Bishop, signed from Leamington, had headed home against Preston North End on Tuesday night at the County Ground from a Callum Johnson cross and it was the two who combined again in the second half to give Stanley the lead against the Sky Bet League Two side.
Sean McConville doubled Stanley’s advantage soon after with one of his trademark strikes from the edge of the area ahead of the Sky Bet League One opener at Lincoln City next week.
John Coleman will be formulating his starting XI for the clash with the Imps but it was Morecambe who forced the early pace with ex-Red Adam Buxton playing in a dangerous cross to the far post which Stanley managed to clear.
Stanley grew into the game with McConville racing onto a ball with Shrimps keeper Barry Roche and getting their first but firing over the bar.
Jim Bentley’s side had a great chance to take the lead when Lewis Alessandra got the ball unmarked in the box, but Ross Sykes superbly blocked his goalbound effort which looped up and Mark Hughes cleared off the line.
Alessandra then tried his luck from the edge of the box but Dimi Evtimov was equal to it.
Shrimps keeper Roche was then the busier, with Bishop steering two headers on target but he couldn’t get past the stopper leaving it all square at the break.
After the break, Aaron Wildig rifled over for Morecambe and ex-Stanley winger John O’Sullivan cut inside but had his curling shot saved by Evtimov.
Morecambe won a penalty when O’Sullivan was judged to have been caught by Seamus Conneely and the Irishman took the spot-kick which was saved onto the post by Evtimov.
Coleman put on Joe Pritchard and Zaine Francis-Angol early on in the second half and Stanley soon took the lead with Bishop leaping highest to head home the opener.
Jordan Clark should have had a second after a tricky run into the area but he couldn’t find the finish.
However it was soon two when Pritchard backheeled to McConville who made space in the area and fired home into the roof of the net.
Bishop came close to adding to the tally while Evtimov denied Rhys Oates at the other end.
Coleman made more changes, as did Bentley, and Roche denied one of Stanley’s trialists at the end to keep it at 2-0.
