Match Report

Billy Kee and Josh Windass were the goal heroes as Stanley maintained their automatic promotion push at Newport County.

The fourth placed Reds scored two quick-fire first half goals for Kee to celebrate his 17th goal of the season – alongside his 13 assists – while Windass marked his return to the side following a double hernia operation in style.

It was Windass’s first start since January 2nd, replacing Shay McCartan who is on Northern Ireland Under 21 international duty – the only change to John Coleman’s side who won 1-0 against Leyton Orient on Friday.

And it was Windass who created the first chance on five minutes when he showed his persistence to play in a low cross to Kee but the striker was denied by the legs of keeper Joe Day.

Stanley came close again on 20 minutes when Windass was tripped just outside the area, Sean McConville took the free kick but unmarked Matty Pearson headed wide.

Newport were a threat though and they then enjoyed a spell of pressure. Scott Barlow broke free on the left wing and played in an inviting cross which striker Scott Boden just couldn’t connect with.

Then, on 26 minutes, Boden flicked the ball onto the inrushing Jake Gosling but Ross Etheridge pulled off a superb one-handed save to deny him.

However Stanley then took control with two goals in 100 seconds.

Defender Pearson deserves credit for the opener after he ran from his own half in the 35th minute, played a one-two with Kee before Pearson’s shot was palmed away by Day and it fell for Kee to drill home his 17th of the season.

Stanley doubled their advantage on 37 minutes when Piero Mingoia played in the perfect cross from the right wing for Windass to fire home his 12th of the season.

Newport started the second half well but couldn’t find a way past Etheridge while Windass almost grabbed another but Day grabbed the ball off his feet.

Windass also curled an effort just wide before he and Sean McConville made way for Rommy Boco and there was a Stanley debut for Reading loan winger Tariqe Fosu.

Chances were then limited with Jake Gosling coming close to getting County back in it on 82 minutes but thankfully his 20 yard free kick was over Etheridge’s crossbar.

Stanley saw the game out comfortably and kept three clean sheets on the bounce for the first time since April 2011.
