Stanley booked their place in the second round of the FA Youth Cup after seeing off Basford United at the Wham Stadium.

A hat-trick from Nathan Webb and a Stuart Gallaway strike did the damage against the non-league side, who were given a glimmer of hope through Kelvin Madden’s low drive in the second half.

The result means the young Reds will now host Fleetwood Town in the next round of the competition.

Stanley saw more of the ball within the opening exchanges, but it was from a set-piece that the opening goal came. Stuart Callaway’s free-kick from the left was swept home by an unmarked Nathan Webb at the front post to give the hosts the advantage.

The young Reds eventually found another gear and when on to double their lead. Good play from Reuban Dass was seized upon by Tyler Scarth, whose initial effort was blocked, and Webb was on hand to stab home the rebound from close range.

Basford were not to lie down, however, and fashioned chances to get themselves back into the game. Wakefield, playing as a lone striker, had the visitors’ best chance with half an hour gone but his header cleared the crossbar. Left-back Myron Duffy and midfielder Madden also came close, but to no avail.

The opening 15 minutes of the second brought a flurry of goals. Webb added a superb third goal before Callaway prodded home a fourth from close range, while at the other end, Madden’s low drive from outside of the area fizzed into the bottom corner to give Basford hope.

Clear-cut chances were limited thereafter, as Stanley kept the visitors at arm’s length to see out the match and set up that clash with Fleetwood.
