Matt Crooks rescued a point for Stanley with his seventh goal of the campaign as they drew with Newport County.

Stanley started well with a Sean McConville goalbound strike blocked by Janoi Donacien while Josh Windass’s shot was kept out by the legs of goalkeeper Joe Day.

Tom Davies picked up an early harsh booking on the slippy surface while John Sheridan had to reshuffle his backline as early as the 20th minute when defender Donacien was stretchered off with Yan Klukowski taking his place.

With the rain making the conditions tricky, both sides struggled to create clear cut chances with quick breaks by Windass and Piero Mingoia cleared at the last moment.

The closest Newport came early on was a strike on 32 minutes by Medy Elito which was wide of Jason Mooney’s far post.

Stanley, however, should have scored the opener in the 35th minute with a sweeping move.  Crooks broke down the left, he found Windass in the area and he squared to unmarked Mingoia but the winger’s strike cannoned off the upright.

Stanley had another superb chance seconds after the restart when Crooks charged into the area but his effort was kept out by Day at the near post.

However, while it was goalless, Newport always knew they could nick one and Lenell John-Lewis wasn’t far off with a chipped effort.

And they took the lead in the 54th minute as Stanley defender Dean Winnard was having treatment off the pitch. Sub Klukowski got the ball in the area from Jazzi Barnum-Bobb’s cross and he flicked it into the top corner of the net.

However the lead only lasted four minutes when McConville’s intial shot was cleared off the line and Billy Kee rifled the ball home to level the scores.

And they came close to another on 62 minutes when Mingoia’s strike wasn’t far over the bar.

But then Newport struck again on 66 minutes when Klukowski found another sub Scott Boden and he ran onto the ball and slammed the ball home.

However Stanley have proved resilient this season and they levelled on 77 minutes when Seamus Conneely rifled the ball against the woodwork from 25 yards and Crooks reacted first to fire home as both sides shared the points.
