Tom Davies thinks a half time talking to from manager John Coleman was just what Stanley needed to turn around yesterday’s game against Cambridge United.

The Reds trailed 2-1 at the break at the Abbey Stadium but were back level three minutes after the restart thanks to a first goal for the club from Davies.

A Josh Windass penalty then put the visitors in front, a lead which they held onto to take another three points on the road.

And Davies credited their renaissance to a reminder from the boss.

“Hearing a few harsh words is part of football and that’s why he’s the gaffer and why he’s doing so well,” said the defender. “He knows the league inside out and he knows his players inside out and he made it clear to us that we weren’t doing what he wanted us to do.

“Fortunately for us we were able to put it right in the first five or ten minutes (of the second half) and then we managed to hold out against what was quite a good Cambridge team.

“Cambridge had the better of us in the first half and Corr and Williamson were a threat but after Josh slotted his penalty, which was never in doubt, we had to make sure we stayed high up the pitch and kept them away from our goal. We did that. It was a very satisfying win and the lads are buzzing with the turnaround. It’s another three points on the road.”

For Davies it was a personal milestone but he was more pleased with the outcome of the game than his own contribution.

“It was obviously nice for me personally to get my first league goal and I know it sounds clichéd but the most important thing was to make sure that the team picked up three points,” he insisted. “After the first half performance we needed to bounce back in the second half and the goals came quickly. We got the job done.”
