Joe Wright was delighted to make his first Football League start at Crawley on Saturday and now wants to continue against Yeovil tomorrow evening.

The Huddersfield loanee came in for the injured Tom Davies at the Checkatrade Stadium and was part of a Stanley defence that kept a third successive clean sheet away from home.

He was pleased with how the afternoon went.

“I knew I had to take my chance, play well and put myself into contention and, you know if you keep a clean sheet, then you are going to pick up points and the lads were unbelievable with Josh (Windass), Crooksy (Matt Crooks) and Billy (Kee) scoring great goals,” he said.

“It couldn’t have gone any better to be honest except for the first five or 10 minutes when I was a bit overcome by the occasion. I am picky and hard on myself though!”

“I knew I needed to play well if I got my chance as Tom and Dean have been unbelievable this season.”

Wright has just returned from a knee injury of his own picked up on international duty with Wales under 21’s and now wants to make up for lost time at the Wham Stadium, starting with another 90 minutes against the Glovers.

“I played a full game for Wales earlier this month and it was good to go away, get game time and some sharpness but I picked up a knock towards the end of the match. It meant I had to go back to Huddersfield for treatment for a few weeks,” he explained.

“Thankfully it’s cleared up now and I just want another chance to start, put in another good performance and keep another clean sheet.”
