Accrington Stanley supporters have used pedal power to raise money for the refurbishment of the team’s changing rooms.
The four intrepid cyclists set off at 8.30am from the Wham Stadium last Saturday and pedalled 47 miles to Morecambe Football Club, where Accrington Stanley were set to play at 3pm.
“The Stanley changing rooms are in a shocking state and desperately need work doing to them, but it costs money,” commented Nick Westwell, Chairman of the Official Accrington Stanley Supporters Club.
“Malcom Isherwood who is Vice Chairman of the supporters club came up with the idea of doing a sponsored bike ride to an away match, and we quickly formed a team. We need to raise around £25k in total and on Saturday we raised another £1,500 which is fantastic, but we still have a long way to go. It’s a shame Stanley didn’t win at Morecambe, but we had a great day!”
Chairman of Accrington Stanley Peter Marsden greeted the team on arrival at the Morecambe ground and bought all the cyclists a well-earned drink.
He said: “A big thanks you to the lads for Herculean efforts in cycling from Accrington to Morecambe and raising an excellent sum towards the Supporters Club changing room fund. It shows how much our supporters care and it would have been nice to reward them with 3 points, buts sadly we were left punctured!”
