Midfielder Danny Whitehead has signed for Stanley after a spell training with the Reds.

The 21-year-old has penned a short term deal at the Store First Stadium and goes into the squad for tonight’s game at Wycombe Wanderers.

He has recently been released by Premier League side West Ham United and returns to his native north west looking for some first team football.

“It’s not too far from where I live and I’ve not played for six or seven weeks now so it’s been an easy decision to come here,” he said. “I’m delighted to get something signed and hopefully get playing.

“It’s a good time for me to sign with a couple of injuries and suspensions in midfield and hopefully I can take my opportunity and be involved tonight at Wycombe. That’d be great.

“I’m ready if needed. I’ve been training here for a few weeks now so I know all of the players well so if and when the gaffer picks me I’ll be ready to do my best for him and the club.”

The former Stockport County man has been around the club for the last few weeks and is keen to help the Reds push up the League Two table.

“I know the lads want to keep getting results and push as high up the table as they can,” he said. “I’d like to help them do that and turn some of the good performances lately into some form. A few wins on the bounce will push us right up the table.

“I’ve got good energy and I like to get forward as much as I can. If I get an opportunity I’ll always try to get a shot away so hopefully I can do my bit if selected.”
