John Coleman wants his Stanley side to ‘keep believing’ – and then he says the victories will come.

The Reds had lost five consecutive games and slipped down the League Two table before Terry Gornell scored an injury time winner against Oxford on Tuesday.

Now Coleman is urging his team to build on this, starting with this weekend’s trip to promotion-chasing Southend.

“Winning breeds confidence,” said Coleman. “I would have liked some more goals for the chances we have created recently but we have got to keep believing we are going to win games.

“If you go out expecting to win, there is no guarantee but you will give yourself a better chance.”

Coleman is not getting carried away with the one victory but is determined to now take the positives from it.

“It’s not like all your problems are solved with one win, you’ve got to keep going and trying to win games,” said Coleman. “We’ve given too many opportunities up in the last seven or eight games.

“Obviously the clean sheet was great but Oxford could have scored quite easily. We’ve got to have a mentality that we’ve got to get stronger and start occupying teams more, which we did.

“We’ve got to keep our concentration, hopefully gain confidence from the clean sheet and take that into the remaining games. There are a lot of games to be played and there are a lot of points to be won.”

Phil Brown’s Southend will prove a tough test as they are fourth in League Two and haven’t lost in ten games – since December 13^th.

“Over the last couple of years in League Two, any game you play you’ve got as good a chance of winning as you have of losing,” added the Reds boss.

“Historically we don’t draw many games so we either win or we lose.

“There have been a lot of comings and goings which has been upsetting but hopefully things will now settle down.”
