John Coleman is looking forward to a battle for the number one shirt over the coming weeks after adding goalkeeper Matt Macey to his squad.
The Arsenal man has arrived on a month long loan deal following Luke Simpson’s departure from the club earlier this week.
The 20-year-old will now compete with Jack Rose for a starting place after the West Brom loanee returned to training following a hip problem.
“Jack’s back from injury but we’ve still brought in Matt,” said Coleman. “We’ve got good competition for places now. It’ a key position and something that we have to get right and we’re lucky to be in the position where we have good calibre goalkeepers and two from Premier League clubs.
“We can enhance a goalkeeper’s learning curve. If I was a goalkeeper I would see it as a good career move coming here.”
Macey has swapped the Emirates for the Store First Stadium and Coleman admitted that a key part in the move was played by Arsenal goalkeeping coach, and former Dagenham & Redbridge goalkeeper, Tony Roberts.
“I spoke to Tony,” said Coley. “He’s been an old adversary for a long time but we’re grateful to him and that the contacts that we have can bear fruit.”
Rose and Macey go into a squad for tomorrow night’s game with Bury with a healthy look to it. Nobody is definitely ruled out and the manager is happy to be at full strength.
“There’s only Adam Buxton not quite match fit but he’s been looking alright in training so we’ve got good options to pick from and I’m sure whoever I select will do the job.”
Two players who won’t be involved are Lee Molyneux and Matt Crooks who have returned to Crewe and Huddersfield respectively after their loan deals expired.
However, that’s not necessarily the end of the story or the end of their Stanley careers.
“The door isn’t closed on either of those,” concluded Coleman. “They are both good players and we haven’t seen the best of either of them by their own admission. I know that if you’re a good player then you’re a good player and eventually that will come through. We’ll have a look at what happens over the next couple of weeks on those two.”
