Stanley boss James Beattie was disappointed with his side’s 2-1 defeat against Cheltenham Town on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Byron Harrison and Koby Arthur were enough for the Robins to take all three points though Stanley missed a golden opportunity to take a point as Kal Naismith missed an injury-time penalty.

Beattie said: “In the first half we didn’t really start the game in any capacity. We were lucky to still be in the game at half-time; I thought Luke Simpson in goal was excellent for us and made some great saves.

“I said to the lads at half-time that there was a chance in the second half to effectively start the game again because we hadn’t started.

“We made a little change to the formation, made a double substitution and got back into the game. It was a great move and there was great awareness in the penalty area from a number of players – George [Bowerman] and then James Gray and Kal [Naismith] who was unmarked for the finish.

“I thought we had the momentum at that stage. We rode our luck a little bit but when we scored to make it 1-1 I thought there was only one team going to win.”

However, it was Cheltenham who took the lead shortly after Stanley had leveled and the manager was disappointed with the manner of the winning goal.

“It was a long ball that we didn’t deal with properly, it hurts me to say, and it’s ended up in the back of our net. At that point a few lads let their heads drop, which I’m not particularly happy about because you have to keep going to the final whistle, irrespective of what situation arises in the game,” he said.

“The lads that didn’t let their heads drop got us out of the mess we were in again and gave us an opportunity to salvage something from the game.

“They’re dejected in there but I’ve said to them that they need to pick themselves up. There’s a great opportunity for them to put it right on Tuesday against Shrewsbury.”
