“It was reminiscent of the Scunthorpe performance,” he said. “It was two totally different halves of football.

“We got off to a good start this week, which was very pleasing. I feel for Mark [Yates] because that’s how we’ve been starting games recently but today was different.

“We were winning headers, winning second balls and winning our individual battles. When you’re on top in games, you need to score and give yourself the advantage.”

Beattie was also pleased with both of the goals his side scored in the first half: “George has gone in with a good finish and then Joycey has got himself one. It’s a rarity but he’s more than happy with it. Peter [Murphy] was a little tired at that point and encouraging Joycey to get forward and we might be doing that a bit more in the future.”

He added: “It was a great away performance. We had to come here and quieten the crowd down.

“We knew we were going to have to weather the storm in the second half. I knew Mark would have a go at them at half-time and the next goal was going to be vital.

“Unfortunately for us, they scored it, and we needed to dig in even more. They bombarded our box with long balls and got a few attacking players on and we had to re-jig our formation for the last few minutes.

“The lads stood strong and I’m very proud of them.”
